Skipper and safety training is most useful when it addresses the boat and decisions the learner expects to manage. A refresher on your own yacht, a structured skippering course and a focused safety session have different aims. Tell the provider which situations feel uncertain and who usually sails with you. Ask how practice, discussion and assessment are balanced, and whether the training can include your crew and the equipment they will actually use.
What to discuss
- Boat-specific coaching for owners and their usual crew.
- Structured skippering development with defined practical outcomes.
- Focused safety and equipment-familiarisation training enquiries.
Prepare your enquiry
- Your experience and the situations you want to handle more confidently.
- Boat details and equipment relevant to own-boat training.
- Usual crew, availability and any particular course requirement.
Compare the scope
- Will the session use my yacht or a training boat, and why?
- Which skills will each participant practise during the booking?
- What preparation, follow-up guidance or assessment is included?
Before you book
Can my regular crew attend an own-boat session?
Ask the instructor to plan around the group and learning goals. Agree roles and participation so the session supports how you actually sail together.
Is equipment familiarisation enough to learn skippering?
Describe your goals to the provider. Learning a device and practising wider boat-handling or decision-making skills require different teaching scopes.
