UNDERSTAND THE SERVICE

Choose with a clearer brief.

A sail repair enquiry should separate visible damage from dissatisfaction with shape or handling. Restitching, replacing protective material, repairing a local tear and altering the sail’s design are different jobs. Give the loft the sail’s construction and history where known, plus photographs showing the whole sail and the affected area. Ask what inspection is needed before a firm proposal and what the recommended work will leave unchanged, particularly if replacement is also being considered.

01

What to discuss

  • Condition assessment and proposed repair scopes for damaged sails.
  • Seam, protective-panel and fitting work within the loft’s capabilities.
  • Alteration or recut enquiries assessed against the existing sail and intended use.
02

Prepare your enquiry

  • Sail maker, construction details and earlier repair records.
  • Photographs and a description of when the problem appeared.
  • The sail’s intended future role and any upcoming departure date.
03

Compare the scope

  • What will be inspected beyond the visible damaged area?
  • What improvement is expected, and what limitations will remain?
  • Will additional findings require approval before extra work proceeds?

Before you book

Does a neat repair restore the whole sail to new condition?

Ask what the repair specifically addresses. A local repair may resolve one defect without changing the sail’s remaining condition, design or handling characteristics.

Can a loft quote from photographs?

Photographs can support an initial discussion. Ask whether the figure is provisional and what physical inspection is needed before the work is confirmed.

Should I clean a damaged sail before sending it to the loft?

Ask the loft how it wants the sail presented. Explain whether it is wet, contaminated or damaged and follow its handling instructions. Avoid adding cleaners, adhesives or a repair that may obscure evidence before assessment. Send useful photographs and identify the sail, but let the loft decide what needs examination.

Will a repair make an older sail perform like a new one?

Ask the sailmaker to distinguish the local defect from the condition and shape of the whole sail. A quotation may address a seam, pocket or cover while leaving broader age-related limitations unchanged. Request an explanation of the repair’s purpose, limitations and any remaining concerns before deciding whether it suits your plans.
