About Yachtmaster Sailing School
Yachtmaster Sailing School is a Melbourne sailing school whose practical courses sail from Royal Brighton Yacht Club in Middle Brighton, on Port Phillip. It has operated since 1988, describes itself as Australia's first Royal Yachting Association sailing school, and is led by Gordon "Gordo" Syme, an RYA Yachtmaster Examiner who has also taught instructor courses for Australian Sailing.
Newcomers can begin with a Taster or Introductory course before moving on to Intermediate and overnight Passage courses. The RYA pathway runs from Competent Crew through the Day Skipper and Coastal Skipper practicals to Yachtmaster preparation, with practical courses run over five days aboard sea-going yachts. Classroom options include Coastal Navigation, Day Skipper Theory, Yachtmaster Theory, the RYA Diesel Engine course, Safety and Sea Survival and marine radio, and the school also offers ICC and CEVNI, Prepare to Charter and own-boat tuition.
It suits sailors who want a traditional, hands-on route to RYA qualifications close to Melbourne, including those preparing to charter overseas. Check the course calendar for current dates.
