About Augusta Yacht Club
## Introduction - Augusta Yacht Club is a small, community-focused yacht club on the Blackwood River at Augusta in Western Australia’s far south-west. Founded in 1994, the club’s clubhouse opened in 2000 and sits on the riverbank overlooking Hardy Inlet. The club runs an informal but organised sailing programme and has a strong local connection to the town’s wider boating and rowing community.
## Programmes & Activities - Regular Sunday racing is a core activity: sailors gather around midday for an early-afternoon start and usually sail two races, with separate starts/courses for catamarans and monohulls. The club’s mixed fleet includes keelboats, trailable yachts (RL24s have a recorded history at the club) and catamarans. - From 2020 the club established a St Ayles skiff rowing programme, with skiffs based at the clubhouse and rowing sessions held multiple mornings per week. The skiff project brought a notable increase in membership and connects the yacht club to local regattas and community rowing events.
## Location & Local Waters - The clubhouse is on the banks of the Blackwood River and club racing takes place on Hardy Inlet, the river’s broad estuary. The inlet provides sheltered estuarine sailing suited to the club’s mixed fleet and the club’s skiff rowing activities. The town of Augusta sits near the mouth of the Blackwood, a few kilometres from Cape Leeuwin, where the Southern and Indian Oceans meet; the estuary character and nearby exposed ocean give the area a strong maritime identity.
## Facilities & Social Life - The clubhouse, opened in 2000 and renovated by members in 2020, contains a clubroom that accommodates roughly fifty people and space to store and launch the St Ayles skiffs. Social wind-ups after racing are an established part of the weekly rhythm.
